The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is recruiting a Radiographer Grade 1–3 in Diagnostic Radiography at Groote Schuur Hospital.
The successful applicant will provide a patient-centred diagnostic imaging service over a 24-hour period while maintaining radiation protection, equipment safety, quality assurance and high clinical standards.

About the Diagnostic Radiographer Position
The successful Radiographer will provide safe, efficient and patient-centred diagnostic imaging services over a 24-hour period.
The position requires the ability to identify and perform the most appropriate diagnostic examinations while producing high-quality images and protecting patients, staff and the public from unnecessary radiation exposure.
Salary by Grade
The salary includes applicable service benefits such as a thirteenth cheque, employer pension-fund contribution, housing allowance and medical-aid allowance.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
- An appropriate qualification that permits registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Diagnostic Radiographer.
- Registration with the HPCSA as a Diagnostic Radiographer.
Experience Requirements
Grade 1
No post-registration experience is required for South African-qualified employees.
Foreign-qualified employees require one year of relevant experience after HPCSA registration where community service is not required.
Grade 2
South African-qualified employees require at least ten years of relevant experience after HPCSA registration.
Foreign-qualified employees require at least eleven years of relevant post-registration experience.
Grade 3
South African-qualified employees require at least twenty years of relevant experience after HPCSA registration.
Foreign-qualified employees require at least twenty-one years of relevant post-registration experience.
Required Knowledge and Competencies
- Theatre radiography experience.
- Mobile radiography experience.
- Fluoroscopy experience.
- General radiography experience.
- Computerised tomography knowledge.
- Magnetic resonance imaging knowledge.
- Experience in a busy general radiography department.
- Knowledge of radiation protection.
- Knowledge of quality assurance and equipment safety.
- Knowledge of Picture Archiving and Communication Systems.
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure, independently and in a team.
After-Hours and Shift Requirements
The successful candidate must perform after-hours and night duties.
This includes scheduled work on weekends and public holidays as part of the hospital’s 24-hour imaging service.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide a patient-centred radiographic imaging service over a 24-hour period.
- Identify and perform the most appropriate diagnostic imaging examinations.
- Produce diagnostic images of a high standard.
- Apply appropriate risk-management measures.
- Maintain optimal care and safe use of radiographic equipment.
- Implement quality-assurance procedures.
- Apply suitable radiation-protection measures.
- Participate in self-development and professional education.
- Assist with training staff members and students.
- Support the Chief Radiographer and Assistant Director with daily departmental activities.
HPCSA Registration Concession
Candidates who do not yet possess the stipulated registration may apply under limited circumstances.
They will only be considered if proof of application for registration and proof of payment of the prescribed fees are submitted on or before the interview date.
This concession applies to health professionals applying for first-time registration in a specific category or for a change in registration status.
