The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is inviting eligible Clinical Psychology master’s students to apply for fourteen Clinical Psychologist Internship posts across major Western Cape hospitals.

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has announced 14 Clinical Psychologist Internship posts for the 2027 training year.

The internships provide supervised clinical experience across hospital, community, child, adult, forensic and intellectual-disability mental-health services.

Internship Salary

R741,102 Per annum

A portion of the remuneration package may be structured according to the successful applicant’s personal needs.

Minimum Educational Requirements

  • An Honours degree in Psychology.
  • Successful completion of the theoretical component of a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology.
  • Eligibility for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Clinical Psychology Intern from 1 January 2027.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to meet the training requirements prescribed by the HPCSA and Professional Board for Psychology.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work accurately under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain high ethical and professional standards.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary clinical teams.

Placement may depend on the number of available posts and the operational needs of each training platform.

Main Internship Duties

  • Conduct inpatient and outpatient psychological assessments.
  • Formulate psychiatric and psychological conditions in adults and children.
  • Provide supervised psychological interventions and treatment.
  • Participate in outreach and support services at district and community health facilities.
  • Gain exposure to a broad range of psychiatric conditions.
  • Work within medical, intellectual-disability and forensic services.
  • Conduct psychometric assessments.
  • Conduct personality, neuropsychological and developmental evaluations.
  • Complete clinical and administrative duties.
  • Participate in the Clinical Psychology academic training programme.

  • A comprehensive and updated CV.
  • Three referee reports.
  • Interim supervisor reports.
  • A copy of the applicant’s identity document.
  • A Matric certificate.
  • Complete academic transcripts.
  • Proof of HPCSA registration as a Psychology Student.

Final Supervisor Report

Successful candidates may be required to submit their final year-end supervisor report before appointment.

Shortlisting and Selection

Shortlisted candidates may be required to complete a technical competency assessment.

Candidates invited to interviews may also be required to submit a reflective task before the interview date.

HPCSA Registration Requirements

Applicants must be eligible for registration with the HPCSA as Clinical Psychology Interns by the start of the internship.
