The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has advertised 20 Pharmacist Internship posts under Emergency and Clinical Support Services.
Successful applicants will complete a structured 12-month internship under the direct supervision of registered pharmacists while gaining experience in pharmaceutical care, dispensing, medicine management and public health services.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
- A basic pharmacy qualification accredited by the South African Pharmacy Council.
- The qualification must permit registration with the SAPC as a Pharmacist Intern.
- Registration, or eligibility for registration, with the SAPC as a Pharmacist Intern.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Knowledge of applicable pharmacy legislation.
- Knowledge of national and provincial health policies.
- Ability to work accurately under pressure.
- Ability to maintain high professional standards.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Computer literacy.
- Ability to work effectively with patients, pharmacists and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
Main Internship Duties
- Demonstrate leadership and initiative when addressing pharmacy-related problems.
- Provide pharmaceutical care under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
- Evaluate prescriptions before dispensing medication.
- Dispense medicines safely and accurately.
- Provide patients with information that promotes compliance and therapeutic success.
- Support the safe procurement, storage, control and distribution of medicines.
- Follow pharmacy policies, procedures and expenditure controls.
- Assist with training and educating pharmacy personnel and other healthcare workers.
- Support health promotion and public-health programmes.
- Comply with regulated norms, occupational health and safety requirements and good pharmacy practice.
Five Preferred Institutions Required
Your cover letter must identify five Western Cape Government health institutions where you would prefer to complete the internship.
Applications that do not list five preferred institutions may not be considered.
Final placement depends on the availability of posts, and successful applicants may be placed at another institution.

Applicants should prepare:
- A cover letter listing five preferred institutions.
- A comprehensive and updated CV.
- Referral or reference letters from three referees.
- A certified copy of the Matric certificate.
- A certified copy of the applicant’s identity document.
- A university academic record covering the three years of pharmacy study.
- A South African Pharmacy Council student-registration certificate.
SAPC Registration Concession
Candidates who have not yet received final registration may still apply under the conditions stated in the official advertisement.
These applicants may be required to submit proof that they applied for SAPC registration and proof that the prescribed registration fees were paid.
This concession applies to health professionals applying for first-time registration.
Technical Competency Test
All shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a technical competency assessment as part of the selection process.
Interviews will be conducted through Microsoft Teams. Applicants should ensure they have reliable internet access, a working camera and a suitable device.
Accommodation
Accommodation will not be provided during the internship. Successful candidates will be responsible for arranging their own accommodation and transport.
