Medical Officer Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following compulsory requirements:

• An MBChB degree or an equivalent recognised medical qualification.
• Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an Independent Medical Practitioner.
• Applicants must be able to confirm their current HPCSA independent-practice registration during the online application.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful Medical Officer will perform clinical, supervisory, teaching, research and administrative duties within the Neurosurgery Directorate.

• Conduct daily ward rounds and assess all allocated patients.
• Record clear daily clinical notes in each patient’s medical record.
• Assess and manage patients during on-call duties.
• Supervise junior healthcare professionals effectively.
• Communicate professionally with doctors, nursing staff, paramedical teams, patients and relatives.
• Use laboratory, radiology and pharmacy resources responsibly and cost-effectively.
• Work effectively in specialist clinics and outpatient services.
• Provide counselling during surgical emergencies.
• Manage patients according to accepted clinical guidelines.
• Attend academic activities and present at departmental meetings.
• Contribute to undergraduate medical training and assist with student examinations.
• Participate in departmental research projects.
• Complete patient-related administrative tasks properly and on time.
